Via Tevere Pizzeria Napoletana is a pizzeria inspired by all things Neapolitan.
this was my second time coming to this place....the pizza is good but I always look up at the cooks...just in the front there where they are making pizza only...the kitchen you can not see...its a very small small place and I think it opens at 5pm and we went on a Tues. nite....four of us...
so no long line up...just beware of this...long line ups....
I looked at the two guys making the pizza and saw the one guy touch his nose as if he wanted to clean it or pick it.......only stating what I see....and I hope they read this comment so they don't do it again. I think he had dark hair and beard....? It was in February that we went.
I do not usually trust people in restaurants at all....especially Asians.... me being Italian born here.....they are some Italians that are dirty also.....but do not trust people and friends at home....I am a little ocd....but sometimes as you know you have to close one eye....
the pasta that nite was awful...too much al dente...and not enough sauce at all...too dry....
the salad was too big for the plate and bacon on it....the appie with the cold cuts was ok....you want antipasto then probable go to the true Italian restaurants like L'Artista...mind you its been a while....I really miss Al Forno in Gastown years back....so good....the pizza brick oven like now....but I tell ya....it was the Best in those days in Vancouver.
I don't believe in tipping and I do tip...I am not cheap but I just don't believe in it too much....I think its like a another meal there......from $10 and up....
I was reading some of my old comments and Moulin Rouge Rest. did close down...thank God and Cheers is gone....the Sweet Cherubim has changed their menu I believe, so its easier to read.
Too bad that Dine Here does not have just comments sections....
All in All Via Tevere is a good place for food....I only recommend the Pizza.....its the same dough I believe that Famoso, Lombardo's, Marcello's and all these new places for pizza brick oven style uses....type 00 flour from Naples....
I just hope the rest. reads this and tells the people behind the counter not to touch themselves and put cameras in the kitchen so the owners can see what goes on....if the staff are being dirty!!!! This goes for all the Resturants!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our first time here was about 3 months ago and we've been back 5 times already and we are NOT avid pizza eaters! This is traditional Naples style pizza, so not very similar to the Panago, Domino Little Caesars poor excuse of pizza we North Americans are used to. We heard Via Tevere imports the flour and don't know if it's true or not but it TASTES true! It's a busy place, no resos so get here when they first open. They are only open for dinner and there will be a line up around the corner if you get there 10 minutes later. The service is casual but friendly and efficient. Everything we've tried has been a hit. So far we've ordered caprese and arugula salads, both dressed just right and the arugula salad is big enough for meal with some bread. Antipasto platter has all the elements we like, good mix of meats, cheese, pickled/roasted veg, more than enough to share. Be forewarned, the meatballs are moist, tasty, and addictive. But the star of the show is obviously the pizza. We like the Napoletana best but all the pizzas we see served to other tables look awesome. It's all about the basics, the oven and the simplicity. We did order the daily pasta one time and my hubby liked it but I didn't think it was stellar. Still, why would you come to the best pizza place in town an not order pizza? If you still have room share a donut for dessert. I'm not much for sweets but I found the donut to be yummy. My teenage son inhaled 2 of these donuts without even blinking.
I've tried coming here in the past, seen the line up outside and just kept driving.. Finally I decided I'll have to just be patient and give it a try so my father, brother and I dined here last night.
The place is tiny and jammed full with a line up again. We give our name and wait.. After about a half hour we are seated at the bar since they didn't have a table available. I had the $13 Margherita pizza with Prosciutto Cotto added. This reminded me of my last visit to Italy. A pizza served un-cut (not sliced into 8) un-cut like how they serve it in Italy and served with a fork and knife. It's very thin (have to eat with fork or cut a portion and fold it)
Authentic Italian beautiful thin tasty pizze here! They also have good Italian beers and desserts.
My only complaint is that they don't take reservations. It's a tiny place and fills up fast. I love the pizza but hate waiting outside in a line to eat.
Came here on a Friday before 6pm and still had to wait an hour. Good thing it was not raining but I think the place is a victim of it's own success since opening in late March. The restaurant is small so capacity is reached quickly. With the line up outside, service and food is a bit rushed. Tried the mozza and tomato salad, was all right but could easily been made at home with store bought ingredients. Tried the arugula and ham pizza which is good, a bit on the wet side which I don't mind. Also the sausage pizza, a bit on the salty side. You had to cut the pizzas yourself which is a bit of a hassle, they explained some sort of reason. Prices are around $15 for the pizzas which is a bit on the high side. Overall, many other new pizza places, going to try so no need to come back and wait in line.
100%!...I've been here a few times now...too bad they don't open for lunch as it is always quite busy. They will take your name/number and text you when your table is ready at least. The pizzas are the game here...wood fired oven and real true ingredients. The value is on par for other pizzerias of this type but that is where it ends. This place has it down...they nailed it! I had my cousin here from Napoli on here honeymoon and they both agreed that is was just like Napoli. As for favorites......I like the proscuitto cotto with arugula and the Vesuvio. Service is competent and the ambiance is east end chic. A special mention to their antipasti selection too. Polpette, frittura and caprese are all well done even if they are overpriced. Would recommend for that authentic pizza experience.
New, Italian pizza joint close by The Drive and nestled amongst heritage homes along Victoria Drive. I really wanted to like this restaurant and it somewhat delivered but didn't take the cigar.
Food: came here for the wood fire oven think crust pizza. The crust apparently takes 90 seconds to bake and it's so thin that the dough is a bit gooey on top. Pizza is uncut so you'll need to cut it yourself if sharing, or fold over like a calzone to eat it the italian way. We ordered the Margherita con salami ($13), and the ingredients were fresh and vibrant tasting. While the pizza was good (not Steveson Pizza awesome), we were disappointed with the appetizer sampler ($16). There are exactly 4 pieces per person (x 2). Each item was a bite sized deep fried morsel like arancini balls or meat ball. Tasted like they were pre-made, frozen, and just thrown into the deep fryer. Very uninspiring.
Service: we were seated right away being a small group of 2 and got seated really near the oven. It was so hot in there that they had to open the door to cool down the place. I was super thirsty and drank all of my water filled in this tiny glass. I waited for our server to return but couldn't find her in the mass of people after she had dropped off our food, tried flagging any staffer walking by, and they all looked down and avoided any eye contact. Thinking that there were 7 or 8 servers pacing about (all very busy looking of course), it was somewhat comical that it took over 10 minutes before I could have my water refilled. Our server, when she did arrive, was competent, friendly, and to the point. Some of the servers appeared quite inexperienced and maybe it's the opening month and they're still working out the kinks.
Value: average pricing for individual sized pizza ($13-16) in a dine-in restaurant. Bit of a rip off for the appeitizer and above average pricing for non-alcoholic beverages like a Limonata ($3). We had a post dinner meal for testing and bill come out to mid-$40's which is on par with similar type restaurants.
Ambiance: quaint, cozy, and very nicely appointed with trendy chandeliers. The space is an open concept with the centerpiece being the wood fired oven at the back of the restaurant and in plain view. The oven is nicely adorned with white and blue mosaic tiles. You can even sit at the bar to admire the chefs hand stretching the dough. Huge line every night and especially so during weeknights. There's a bar on the side and square and rectangular tables line both sides of the restaurant. This building use to belong to Figaro's Garden and the new owners kept the signage as a decorative homage to the former tenant. The side wall also has a 1930's ghost sign which is really cool and really brings out the character of the restaurant. Good vibe filled with diverse clientele.
Went there tonight with a few friends. Its great to have a restaurant in a middle of an residential area. The pizza is very good, the only thing I not crazy about is cooked basil. It would be better to put the basil fresh on the pizza after it comes out of the oven.
The waitress did a great job answering all our questions. The quality of pizza has gone up in Vancouver and places like Lombardos and Marcellos have fallen way back when it comes to authentic Italian pizza. I recommend this place great service atmosphere and staff.
If you like to line up with brainless hipsters this is the place for you , otherwise avoid this joint . In my view anyone who lines up for pizza , or any food really , is bordering on stupid .
The pizza is typical Napolitan stuff , burnt thin crust and very little toppings , in other words extremely cheap to make . Prices are very high for what you get . Also had the meatballs , they came tepid and tasteless , I guess spices is not a napolitan thing .
Do yourself a favour and go to Lombardos instead , or even better Sunrise
I live in the neighborhood so my partner and I thought we'd visit Via Tevere. We arrived at 5:30 and floor seating was maxed-out (they open at 5:00), so we were invited to sit and eat at the bar, where we had a front row view of the pizza making. It's an attractive room with high ceilings, chandeliers and big sunny windows. Our server was very pleasant and very attentive. I screwed up and ordered a different pizza than the one I thought I was ordering (the Napoletana - with anchovies, which I love) and when the server learned of my mistake, she immediately, without asking, brought me a bowl of anchovie fillets, gratis, and said that she hoped this would make things better. Very cool.
On to the food.
The starter arugula salad was supposed to have a caper and lemon vinaigrette with Parmesan cheese. Lemon taste - yes. However, it's likely that the greens shared shelf space in the walk-in cooler with a jar of capers, but I'm not sure that those little capers ever made it into the dressing. The greens were fresh and plentiful and the the salad had a generous amount of Parmesan cheese, but overall it was a little bland. It really needed a savory salty kick - the capers would have done it, had they been discernible. Olives would have been nice too. It's a solid salad, just don't expect to be wowed.
The pizzas. We had the Vesuvio with tomato, fior de latte cheese, salami and capicollo, and the Capricciosa with fior de latte cheese. prosciutto, salami, artichokes and mushrooms. Both had very tasty toppings and their tomato sauce is excellent - simple, fresh, light and tomato-y. The crust however, was a major disappointment. It's likely that Neapolitan pizza is supposed to have a gooey centre, but I didn't like it and it came as a shock. The center of both pizzas were literally as wet as boiled lasagna noodles. Not a pleasant mouth feel at all. Because of where we were seating I can attest to the fact that the pizzas are baked in their wood-fired oven for only 90 seconds. Maybe that's the culprit, I don't know, and I frankly I don't care. I shouldn't have to scoop my pizza with a spoon. That's just wrong. Fix the gooey crust and the pizzas would be great.
One more thing - the pizzas are served on thick white ceramic plates. As the pizza crust is so thin, the plates just suck the heat out of your pizza in a minute or two. Not very nice. They need to find a way to heat their plates before serving.
I really want to give them another chance, because I really want to support local businesses, but the gooey pizza center thing is an impediment I can't cross:) Somebody please post a review when this has been fixed.
When a restaurant has people queuing shortly after opening and prepared to wait an hour, its usually a good sign of whats on offer.
While diners are entitled to their opinion and will find faults in just about every establishment, Via Tevere is right up the alley for those who appreciate great food; good, friendly service and reasonable value for money. Whoever said their meatballs were bland must be a corpse without a pulse. For such a simple dish, I've never tasted its equal...they should rename them 'crack-balls'.
I do hope this restaurant sticks around for a long time to come.
Oh, and another bonus is ample, free street parking if you get there early enough. Beats the hassle of Kits and downtown anyday.
