Salade de Fruits is a self-proclaimed "Real French Bistro".
I ate lunch here yesterday with my brother and father. The place is small and cramped. The service was friendly. We had the $15 mussels & fries to share for an appetizer. Large portion size, the Mussels were good, 3.5 out of 5 but the fries that came with it were a lot of crumbs and small pieces that shouldn't have been served. Next I had the pasta of the day - $10 Cannelloni. This dish was very average, 2.5 out of 5.
Based on the reviews I read here I was expecting food that would "wow" me a little. I brought along 2 family members and they both thought the same about the food here.
I don't see any reason to return. Was just an average meal.
I visited this place for lunch today and it was surprisingly good. The quality of ingredients wasn't the best but everything was homemade and you could tell someone put a little bit of love in the food. I had the ham sandwich with lentil soup and both were tasty. The lentil soup was made from scratch. Its kind of like eating in a community centre if you are at a table on the outside of the actual cafe but its not bad. The value is very good for the quantity of food you get which is probably why it was so busy when I went.
I took Mrs. C to experience some real French food. We lived in Paris a few years ago, and we really missed the restaurants there.
This restaurant is located in the lobby of the French Cultural Centre. It is really basic, with folding chairs and plain wooden tables. The good thing is that we were seated without a reservation, but it was a little unnerving to be in the multi-purpose room.
The server was very knowledgeable, and the menu was interesting. I had the ‘plat de jour’ although they called it something else. I thought it was a good deal for $21. It was a salad with a goat cheese medallion, a really nice cote de boeuf, and a sorbet for dessert. I also had a glass of wine that was not the equal of anything from a convenience store in France. Still, the food was the real deal.
I think the server overheard me telling my wife that a previous reviewer had raved about the fabulous beef here :) because he substituted the beef for the basa fish that was supposed to be part of the meal. I REALLY appreciated that!
Mrs. C had crepes with ham and cheese, and a side salad, which were as good as you would get in a Paris bistro. The preparation was simple, but the quality of the ingredients and presentation were quite good.
I also ordered a café crème, but while it was a valiant effort, it was not as good as I have had. I noticed in my travels that you can get a good cup of coffee anywhere in Paris. It would be unfair to expect the same thing here.
If you can ignore the spartan décor, you can get a very good meal at a reasonable price.
I never knew what the term "cuts like butter" really meant until Friday night when I went for dinner with the girls at Salade de Fruits. The table of the week featured a very nice Proscuitto salad. The citrus dressing was very nice and light. The main was the Filet de boeuf sauce crème et poivre served with fries. I am not a steak fan. In fact, I don't eat beef. But I gobbled up this steak in record time. It was so tender and juicy, one could carve it up with a butter knife! Fries were served with a mayo - nice European touch. For dessert, we had a choice of either chocolate mousse or blueberry pie. I found the mousse a little bit too rich for an end-of-meal finish.
The service was outstanding. Our server was very attentative and kept bringing us more and more of their fabulous bread. He was very social and accommodating. My one issue is their wine list. They only served 2 kinds - red or white.
The restaurant, like another reviewer posted, is very easy to miss. It's a small place right inside the French Cultural Center. There was no sign outside. Eventhough the the atmosphere was quaint and intimate, it was a little awkward how the restaurant kinda spills into the lobby of the cultural center.
Overall, I was very impressed with the quality of food for such a small price (3-course meal for only $21.99!). Since their table d'hote menu changes every week, I will be sure to return. Very small restaurant so be sure to make reservations!
I came with my bf last month for lunch. We had french onion soup, a lamb sausage sandwich, and mussels. The french onion soup was bland, not enough onion, not enough beef flavour, not enough cheese, and it wasn't even baked. The lamb sausage sandwich was overcooked and dry, and the presentation looked like it took less than 10 seconds to put together. The mussels were actually ok for the price, although I rarely had mussels worse than this one. The mussels were slightly rubbery and the fries that came with the mussels were soggy and oily.
The server was friendly and helpful on changing an uncleaned fork.
The price was not expensive at all.
There is nothing wrong with the ambiance, it's just a cheap lunch place. I didn't expect much to begin with.
I would probably not go again, but if you haven't try, you should go at least once.
Went with a friend to try their Tableau D'hotes ( 3 course set menu) for dinner and was very satisfied: the chilled roasted vegetable terrine starter in a balsamic dressing was a colorful, creative and pragmatic use of kitchen leftovers; the stuffed leg of lamb was tender; the vegetable sides were fresh and well portioned, the creme brulee dessert came in a proper sweet and creamy vanilla-bean infused texture. No complaints for $21.99. Ambiance was cozy, jazzy French bistro. The patio was quite nice, although the tables were cramped together. Now what separates Salade de Fruits from the fine dining category, are the little details like the excessive fat around the lamb not being trimmed, the lump in the mashed potato, and the undercooked and underseasoned baby carrots. But still more casual bistro fair still deserves attention to such details.
The next day, a group of us went to try their lunch. Our group had the lamb shank, mussels and ham omlette. The entire party was satisfied with their meal. Througout the meal we were constantly checking out other patron's orders which all looked fresh and tasty.
I will be going back to try their weekend brunch. Three visits to Salade de Fruits in 1 week! Can't give this little bistro a better endorsement!
Had a lovely meal here tonight with some friends. I tried their Table d'Hotes...which consisted of: An Onion tart with mesulin greens for an appy; A juicy New York Steak with Mushroom Sauce with POtato Gratinee and Vegetables; and an elegant Pear tart with whipped cream and melon syrup. The Jaw dropper? 19.99 for all 3 courses. House white/red wines go for 5.00 each glass. You can definetely have a well rounded meal here for well under 30.00 each person. The place has since expanded in size and depth, offering more room for its patrons to move about and relax. Owners and operators are french, and filled with whimsy. Great service too - our server did not have a problem explaining the entire menu which was written in French (for authenticity I suppose). Salade de Fruits is a wonderful bistro, a place where you can truly relax, drink some wine, and have some crusty french bread with your meal for a great price.
I love, love, love this restaurant! It's located foyer area of the Vancouver Francophone Cultural Centre (very unique). All of the staff speaks French and the menu is in French, but the servers will translate the entire menu for you. The servers are very friendly and helpful. The menu offers all of the standard French fare at fantastic prices. I've only ever ordered the fish of the day, but my friends have tried the other dishes and everyone only has good things to say. Salade des Fruits have made a definite fan out of me!
The only downsides to the restaurant, and they're not really downsides, are the bathrooms are awkward to find your first time and the restaurant only accepts cash.
Salade de Fruits is always busy because it is cheap. If you like Stepho's you will like Salade de Fruits and you may not have to line up. Given the low prices, it is to be expected the quality of the food is not the best. The steak is probably no more than Grade A. The good restaurants in Vancouver serve Grade AAA. The fries are plentiful but badly cut. You'll be lucky to get more than 2 or 3 that are more than 2 inches long. They cut their own but don't bother sizing them. They should probably use McCain instead for more consistent size. Often, it is clear from the colour of the fries that the oil they use for frying has been reheated too many times and is too old. The tables are wobbly and too close together. The servers rush about as best they can but they are too few on the floor for the number of covers they do. Cash only and very limited wine and beer selection.
A revisit found the service friendlier. A party of two was offered a larger table than the original card table proposed since the restaurant was less busy than perhaps was expected although it later filled up with walk-ins in parties of three and more. Service was prompt and cheerful. Water copious and initial refusal of alcohol caused no concern.
The food was fine. This party would probably have preferred smaller portions with a little more finesse.
The ambiance is odd if you are seated in the lobby. Feels a bit temporary and makeshift. Not a place you'd linger in.
Value for money - no complaints, but remember it is cash only.
Toilets upstairs. Spacious and clean. if there is an elevator I did not see it
Food: I ordered the Canard confit. The skin had just the right amount of crisp to it and the meat was flavourful and juicy. It came on a bed of mashed potatos and mixed steamed veggies. The sauce was very good!! Some of my friends had the special; which was some sort of deer. They said it was good and wasn't "gamey".
Service: It was a really fun experience because my French is limited and the entire menu was in French. However, the server translated all the items in a very enthusiastic way. It was great! We had a party of 10 but our food and drinks came almost all together at a very reasonable time!
Value: For a decent French restaurant, this place is really good! My dinner was $16 but if you want an extra duck leg it's just $19. The special was $25, I think. The portion size is decent. I was very satisfied!
Ambiance: I would have given this place a 4 but I agree with the previous reviewer about the washrooms. It's clean and everything but you have to go through 3 sets of doors and a couple flights of stairs.
Came here for a birthday dinner. The waiters are extremely funny and friendly. We ordered mussels and escargots to share for appetizers. The mussels were excellent! Definitely the highlight of the evening. However, we all thought that the escargot was just okay (they don't come in the shell -- they might have been pre-frozen ones).
For dinner, my friends who had steak really enjoyed their meals. I ordered the duck confit which unfortunately the meat was a bit too dry for my taste. Next time if I return, I would like to eat mussels (and frites) for a meal.
Desserts were okay to very good. We ordered an assorted dessert plate and split it. The best dessert we tried was the creme brulée. The great thing is that their desserts are not overly sweet, just the way we like them.
All in all, a very solid experience. For the five of us (we did not drink wine, only had water), bill came out to $165 including taxes but not tip. We would definitely return again. The place was bustling the whole time we were there -- an excellent sign!
This place was started by a french Chef named Antoine, and he's run it successfully for many many years, the food is always simple, fresh - nothing fancy, traditional and fusion french dishes that remind you of France if you've ever been there. The prices are very reasonable, the Moules + Frites (Mussels and Fries, really a portion for 2 is 14$, a bucket of mussels and a big dish of excellent fries).
At dinner time they have excellent course meals, for about 25$ - the waiters all speak french, the building is kind of a "french quarter", so it's authentic as you can get in Vancouver.
Simply put, this place is known by word of mouth, but it's always packed for lunch and dinner, just an excellent bistro.
This definitely reminds me of good bistros in Paris. The three course menu changes every week (see their website for the latest choice) and is a very good value compared to a meal at "fine-dining" franchises. The food tastes fresh and delicious, and I expect that they make everything from scratch. The server that greets you is extremely charming and always makes us laugh, but your meal often gets served by one of younger gentlemen who are less enthusiastic.
They are closed Sundays and Mondays and only accept cash so plan accordingly.
I took my mom here for her birthday and it was an instant home run.
Just coming in we are greeted by the french culture. Servers were speaking french, the bulletins were french, and the community center around was french. It's definitely its own little world on 7th and Fir st.
The service was amazing, as the server translated EVERYTHING on the menu into English and described every meal. They have escargot, frog legs, rabbit, duck patte, you name it, they got it!
For our meal we got the leak & potato soup, crab cakes, and escargot for starters. Then for entrees we ordered the famous mussels, New York steak, and rack of lamb.
The soup was nice and piping hot, exactly what we wanted and TBH, quite rare in most restaurants. Other soups come luke warm and gross. The texture was perfect, not too creamy and just right.
Crab cakes were good too, coming alongside a big portion of salad. Although they were small and petite, the crab cakes were delicious.
The escargot hit the table and it was just amazing. Being bathed in garlic butter, it is needless to say any more. Oh and don't forget to ask for more bread to dip!
Mussels were to die for. You need to order them. It's mandatory. The bread goes well with them as well - did I mention the bread was bottomless?
New York steak was average, but hey it's steak. And the rack of lamb with pepper corn sauce, oh my, this isn't you're typical black pepper corn sauce. It has a hint of sweet to it, bringing out the pepper perfectly. Altogether for 6 dishes = $108.. not bad huh?
This place 5 stars all the way through. The service was amaznig, food was amazing, ambiance was modern/cozy.. prices are very reasonable.
Enough said? Definitely coming back.
This café was recommended by several acquaintances so I decided to check it out as I haven't had French cuisine in a while.
I went with a friend. Taking a look around the place, I'm glad I didn't go with a large party of people, as the space is quite modest. While we weren't seated immediately because there were only two servers that night, we were promptly served fresh bread after we sat down. After we finished the first few pieces, the waiter quickly came to refill the plate with more bread.
We ordered the Grilled Romaine Salad (Romaine a L'ail) to share. It was extremely tasty. Who knew a salad could pack so much flavor? The portion was also quite generous.
I ordered the duck (with the cassis sauce) and my friend ordered the mussels and fries. Wowee, the mussels and fries portion was massive. You get a big pot of mussels and one separate place of fries. The fries were crispy even after they cooled down. I don't like mussels normally, but decided to try one anyway, and that was good even to me! While I wouldn't order it for myself simply because I'm not a mussels fan, I do admit it was tasty and was extremely fresh.
The duck I had was a bit on the chewy side since it was cooked rare, but the sauce was amazing. The mashed potatoes were very creamy and the vegetables were soft and tender.
I ordered the profiterolles for dessert and those were amazing. They were like Ice Cream puffs with an extra flaky pastry shell and warm chocolate sauce.
My friend ordered a ganache au chocolat. It was very rich and you could taste the dark chocolate in every bite.
After all that, our bill came out to about $80 for two people, and that's a three course meal for the both of us already!
Will definitely be back. I hope to try the steak or their lunch menu on my next visit.
Great Food and Incredible vaue
We had their fixed prie - starting with greens, which were alright
Boulibase soup for the entree, this now was delicious and finished off with a delicious tarte.
Although, the only downside was their very limited wine menu, that was quite dissapointing.
It is a tiny, hidden gem for the locals. Very granville cafe atmosphere, if you are a vancouverite you would know what I mean. Relaxing, leisurely, friendly atmosphere. They also have a charming patio, probably 10 seats.
It was Solid, they do alright, not the most friendliest of service. We definetly felt the pressure when they came around to ask us what we wanted to order.
Recommendation: definitely be back
Came here with a girlfriend for dinner. It was full inside so we sat outside in the foyer area, but it was still nice and cozy. Servers were very friendly and attentive. Ambiance had a great French feel to it -- tall candles, French menus are wooden slates and water comes in a glass jar. We shared the fish in lemon and butter, and their daily special Tiger prawns. Both came with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables, all were very fresh. For dessert we shared the sorbet which was tasty. Very decent prices for good quality and good portions. I'd definitely return!
Even though it was a busy Friday night, we came without reservations & got a table where I wanted (not in what looked like the cramped, dark dining room). We sat by the window in the open area the restaurant shares with le centre culturel. The tables outside are kind of cramped, but that's the French way. The servers were really great, very helpful, and patient. We had a pitcher of water for ourselves so we didn't have to ask for refills. When my meal came, the server pushed things to the side and readjusted my plate so I never had to touch the hot plate myself. I had the escargot with chilean sea bass while my bf had the table d'hote. I thought the escargot dish was done really well--very hot is garlic butter & oil but I would've preferred a different style, perhaps baked with a creamy sauce and I like my bigger but I think smaller is better. I saw the mussels & fries at the other table looked really worth it. The sea bass was done very well. The vegetables were al dente. I would've preffered the squash more cooked. But the butter sauce was not too buttery and the dish was nice and hot. My bf's starter was a salad. Not being a cheese lover, he loved the boccocini, which I thought was usually very buoyant, but it kinda crumbled. New style of boccocini for me! The salad tasted great although he said he would've liked cooked onions. The complimentary bread was really crispy and fresh. His main was lamb leg but and he knew it was sliced cuz the server said so. But he wanted it to not be sliced and crispy. But I think we just have to order a different dish. Nonetheless, it was tender and succulent. The mains were both balanced with a good amount of vegetables, carbs, & meat. The dessert was an apple tart. We thought it was a hard crust, like lemon tarts but it was flaky. It was delicious, a bit small, but made very well. I think the food was worth the price; it is french food after all. The 3-course meal was more worth it than at Glowbal which is more expensive & doesn't even include vegetables. We will definitely be back (be sure to bring cash) because their food is flavoured well, made well, not salty or buttery, and the service is really really great! Merci!!
I heard about this place from someone who works locally around there years ago. When I finally tried out this place one day with two other girlfriends, I found the place in a weird building not knowing it was there the Restaurant. (I think it's a French School or something)
Too small but nice and it can be a little more bigger the place. We sat outside usually I am not a outside kind of person, but there was no tables inside to be seated for 3 people.
The food was good, I had the Stuffed Ravioli, my friends had the Sandwiches and soup, it was all nice. The service is good, but one of my girlfriend returned with her hubby and she said the Service was not good, the server was snobby and commented on something.
Prices can be a little cheaper. Good food. Make the place bigger.
