A coworker of mine swore by this place, he really liked the food and something else he valued greatly was how they recognized him and knew what he wanted to order. I'm not a regular and don't want or need that, but I have had some things from here before and it was okay.
But not today. I had the Cali-box and some edamame.
- Edamame - while the portion was quite generous, they weren't very good. I can't put my finger on exactly what was wrong, they tasted just off somehow - perhaps old, not fresh? I've had frozen edemame that were far better-tasting than these. These also had absolutely no seasoning whatsoever. Found a packet of salt in my desk, thank heavens, which made them edible. Just barely.
- Miso - I really enjoy miso and I like salt, but the miso was so overly salty I I simply could not drink it and had to throw it out
- Tempura - 3 pieces of the tempura were good, but the rest were awful - very greasy, soggy and limp. There was no dipping sauce for the tempura, either.
- California roll - I needed a magnifying glass to find the avocado. I think there might have been a smear on the inside of the nori. They were pretty chintzyon the cucumber too, and the rice wasn't especially tasty, either, just didn't seem...fresh.
- Sashimi - fans of wasabi would have been disappointed, there was no customary dot of wasabi underneath on any of them.
- Koroke - the half piece was okay
- Salad - good, I liked the dressing. Too bad there wan't more salad as it was really the only thing I enjoyed
The diner is very basic and simple. The service was really bad. He was poorly dressed and didn't look very well groomed. His attitude was unfriendly and border-line rude.
I had their Wun Tun soup, which at the time of eating it... tasted okay. Unfortunately, later in the evening after getting back home, I had to stay close to the washroom. The soup was bad.
I looked up the latest Fraserhealth Inspection Report (http://www.healthspace.ca/Clients/FHA/FHA_Website.nsf/0/A8208E50CA7DD63A88258005006E9936?OpenDocument) and saw the folllowing...
Equipment/utensils/food contact surfaces not properly washed and sanitized
Adequate handwashing stations not available for employee
Food not protected from contamination
Food not thawed in an acceptable manner
Conditions observed that may allow entrance/harbouring/breeding of pests
Food premises not maintained in a sanitary condition
Great Vietnamese Subs and affordable prices... all under $5. Service is friendly! Ideally located close to the New Westminster skytrain station and Douglas College.
The place just recently opened up. Been there many times now and will definitely continue to be a repeat customer. Glad to see quality restuarants like this opening up in New Westminster!
Longtail has been on my list of 'must-try' for a while and perhaps perusing the website had boosted my expectations higher than they should have been.
Whilst I wasn't disappointed with the flavours, I was with the portion size, and cost. I half expected the prices to be on par with Granville Island or Lonsdale but they were closer to fine dining without the service and ambiance.
Ordered a pad Thai with prawns - flavours and texture meshed well. The three prawns were just three prawns and well I wanted more. Considering it cost $12, and you're eating out of a paper container, I don't think it's too much to ask for. We also had the roti with peanut sauce for $5, not bad, peanut sauce was better than anticipated. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I not seen the same person taking my cash, then immediately touching the roti to fry.... Wings were good and the tea from the tea is pretty good.
The skinny on this place: great flavours, small portions, high price.
Worst service of any restaurant I have ever been to. Server was horrible but tip was included so she did not have to come by. Food was great but service was non existant. Didn't even bother to take desert order. Found server in back to get bill.
It's hard for me to be objective because aside from providing great food at a great price in a modest but wonderfully comforting atmospher the owners have their hearts in the right place as they truly feed the hungry and clothe the poor in the way of the generousity they extend to the indigent street people. Eating there will always be satisfying to both the stomach and the heart not to mention the wallet. As well where else can your meal be delivered to your table via electric train complete with whistle?
Well, its my turn again to head out to New West for some culinary eats. My buddy decided on this place as he and his wife have been here several times before. I have to admit I was skeptical as my usually stomping ground for tacos was on cambie and broadway. New West and Mexican food???Huh?? Anyways, we decided on lunch wednesday . Parking is basically everywhere...paid parking on 6th Street or on the side streets. I was lucky to find a 1 hour free spot on a side street.
The restaurant looked pretty small as I was walking in to find out they actually did renos and expanded to the store next door. My buddy and his wife were already seated and waited for me.... ambiance...look good....solid wooden chairs and tables with splashes of bright colors on the walls. Checking out the menu I decided on the Ceviche ($7) and 4 different tacos: 2 Al pastors, 1 Camaron and 1 Pescado ($2.50 each) plus a pop ($2). My buddy and his wife got the Pozole Rojo soup ($10) , Carne Asada ($13) and chicken Flautas($11) house platters with two glasses of ice water. The waitress was friendly but her English was okay but the good thing was my buddy's wife spoke fluent Spanish!! Thank Goodness!!
In no time...we were served a complimentary bowl of pastel colored tortilla chips with squeeze bottled red and green salsa. The chips were standard but the salsas were the stand outs...flavorful with or without a bit of heat.In about 10 minutes, I got my ceviche with chips and they got the big bowl of Pozole. The Ceviche was quite tasty!!! The combination of diced basa fish in lime juice (the acid cooks the fish) with a mixture of cilantro, onions, tomatoes and avocado was a treat in my mouth. The best??? No but a good second. The best I ever had was at my old work place where another buddy of mine made it in house...used top notch ingredients: diced halibut, scallops and cooked shrimp.. same mixture but cucumbers instead of avocados.
The main attractions arrived just a bit later. The tacos....seems strange..... only one soft tortilla usually there are two. Anyways rather than bitch about it...eat man!! The al pastors (marinated pork, diced onions, cilantro and pineapple tibbits) were very good...good meaty favor with a touch of sweetness. Usually my GOTO taco. The camaron taco ( garlicky shrimp, celery, onions, cilantro, and melted cheese) was a combination of sweetness, crunch and creamness in my mouth....that was also very good . But the piece de resistance was the pescado taco ( garlicky fish fillet, celery, onions, cilantro and melted cheese)..this thing just melted in my mouth...this one was excellent.
All in all a very good meal. I asked them about their selections....they said very good as well. My buddy was stuffed....he barely finished his carne asada platter (grilled sirloin steak with side of rice pilaf, refried beans pico de gallo and 3 corn tortillas). His wife gave me a piece of the chicken flautas( 4 corn tortillas rolled with shredded chicken, then deep fried. Topped with cheese, tomato, onion, cilantro ,guacamole and sour cream with an addition of salsa roja)...its very good...chicken was tender, tortilla was crisp and saucy..the blend of topping just took it over the top. So for some real authentic Mexican food...stop here..of all the places..New West..GO FIGURE?? Thanks for reading!!
We went to Hon's at the opening of their business day at 11:00. There was one other person there.
We ordered the beef slices with chow mein. Other diners starting coming in and ordered. We sat there and
and waited for our food. People ate and left. Finally, at about 11:35, we got our order.
Food was absolutely terrible and not edible. I am not a picky eater but the noodles tasted like it was
plastic & the meat was very chewy & tough.
Needless to say, we will never set in this location again. It used to be ok.
In general, I like this place. Staff are always friendly and food is delicious. I love the coffee there! That being said, the prices on the menu have increased a few times since Angelina sold the restaurant to the new owner.
I would still go if it wasn't for the line-ups on the weekends. They don't take reservations... I hate waiting in line-ups for any longer than 10 minutes, so as a result I usually end up going to the De Dutch Pannekoek House instead. With the prices going up at Angelina's, it's pretty close to the prices at De Dutch, but without the line-ups.
I reviewed this restuarant back in January, 2015, and I had nothing but good things to say about this place. Unfortunately, since then the quality of the food went downhill. I'm not sure if they changed cooks in the restaurant or what, but I've stopped ording chinese food from this place as a result.
I have not discovered any other chinese restaurants in New West that are worth going back to. If I want decent chinese food, I have to make a trip into Vancouver.
Being that I live walking distance to this restuarant, I've tried it out many times since it opened.
1. Decent ambience and fair number of TVs at the bar. Great for when I just want a few beers and watch the Canucks on TV.
2. Waitresses are attentive and friendly.
1. Menu is overpriced. Both food and drinks are alot compared to other pubs in the area and it doesn't take much to rack up a big bill.
2. The menu is limited. The only thing that kept me going back for dinners was the roast beef dinner, but I recently discovered that they took that off the menu. Huge mistake! They should be capitalizing more on menu items like that.
3. With the high ceilings, it can be extremely noisy when there are alot of people in the restaurant. If you're the type that likes to have a conversation with your guest without having to shout, then this is definately not the place to go.
Since they removed the roast beef dinner from the menu, I haven't returned. There's another pub calls Hops in the same complex that serves way better food, not as noisy, has alot of TV's for watching sports, and the prices are reasonable.
I ordered a X-large veggie pizza to go and asked the person on the phone to leave a quarter of the pizza without cheese cause my kids are allergic to dairy. The staff(Sam) told me it's not gonna be exactly a quarter because cheese melt. I totally understand because I worked at a pizza joint myself before. I said as long as there are some slices that's without cheese then I'm totally fine, it doesn't have to be exactly a quarter of the pizza.
When my hubby picked up the pizza and brought it home, the whole pizza has cheese on top! I called them immediately. The staff (Sam) told me they didn't make any mistake. He told the person who made the pizza to leave a quarter without cheese and he did. I asked him then how come my whole pizza has cheese!? He said as he mentioned on the phone, he can't promised it's a quarter without cheese?! Are you kidding me? I told him, if today I received a pizza with 20%, 15% or even 10% without cheese then I wouldn't make this phone call. But I called because a received a pizza with 100% cheese on the whole pizza! how can you said you didn't make any mistake!!!? He then said then probably I don' know what cheese looks like on the pizza!? Ridiculous! I request to speak to a manager to have this issue resolved immediately. He said there's nothing he can do and he's the person in charge for the time I called. Then he disconnected the phone!
Unbelievable!!!!! I would never ordered a pizza from them again. They ruined my dinner and my kids was left without dinner to eat!
All you need to do is click on the inspection reports icon. Looking into the kitchen myself, I found it to be the worst thing I had seen...and I have eaten in some pretty dodgy places! The service is slow and unfriendly. This place used to be great, but sadly it has gone to the dogs. I had ordered a variety of items on the menu and found that not a single one was worth consuming. Whatever ambiance this place had a few years back, is no longer here. Unwelcoming, rude and gross are about the only things that come to mind. Such a shame!
So I arrived early to meet a friend who I was waiting for 5pm dinner. The owner just stood there and looked at me. No greeting or welcome or would you like to be seated nothing. So I just sat my self down at a table, all of the tables were empty as I was the only customer. Their house is connected to the building so you can hear people talking while you are eating. The door that connects to the house is always open.
Once my friend arrived we started looking at the menu at was on the table, then the server arrived and asked us if we were ready. I ordered shahi paneer and garlic naans and the shahi paneer did not live up to my expectations in the past when I ordered it here the sauce was thick and the cheese pieces were big, this time the sauce was watery and the paneer pieces were like 1/4 of the size they used to be and they didn't put in much paneer and charged me the same price. I felt ripped off.
my friend had the vegetable biryani that was so hot to eat. He started sweating so much and then had to order raita to even it out, still the sweat was pouring out of him and he looked like he had come out of a shower. I had no idea biryani could be so unbearable.
Also, the server was not very helpful we did not feel very welcome and the food was just bland. We kept running out of napkins as most of them were used to clean off the sweat from his forehead.
NEVER, Ever Again.
Poor service. Lousy atmosphere. Ordered a bottle of Pinot Gris wine and got some reusable water bottle of sparkling piss. What the heck is that??? Absolutely foul.
My wife and I then got the bill with the ADDED 18% TIP? WTF? Then go to pay and it asks what % tip again?
I get better food and service at McDonalds.
I hadn't been to this location before. But our group had a toddler and new baby ... on a week night ... so seemed a good choice. I do not believe the food is worth the prices they charge but it is consistent. What made the difference here was the staff. They were very helpful and REALLY REALLY nice. Going into a restaurant with little kids is not easy and we try to not disturb other dinners - if a kid starts to cry we either calm them down instantly or we take the kid out of the restaurant asap. Our server was fast, efficient, and actually seemed to like the kids (a lot pretend they are invisible). The bill says her name was Natalie and she had longish white blonde hair - a great server!
Up until recently, I had been a regular visitor to this establishment STRICTLY for the musical entertainment FURNISHED by the hired karaoke company. For the last few months, that had also gone "downhill" owing to the poor amount of clientele going to this establishment on the weekdays.
If you wanted to order something to drink or eat, you had to wait for a long time to be served. If you ordered something nonalcoholic because you were driving; and went to pay the BILL, you suddenly found that, instead of a small amount for a pop or, even water; you were served with a bill for $10 which the owner gave to you saying that this was the minimum rate, and that "everyone knows that". I should mention, however, that nowhere listed in the menu, on the walls/doors, or even on their own website is this mandatory "minimum rate" put in writing.
Although the service by the waitresses was adequate, the service by the owner, however, leaves much to be desired, as she is more interested in looking at her text messages on her cell phone then she was dealing with her customers. Any tips given to her employees, however, made their way into her pocket at the end of the night.
$10 MINIMUM ENFORCED WITHOUT NOTICE?!?!?!! -- My friends and I came there for the karaoke one night recently, to celebrate my girlfriend's 30th birthday. However, I found that the service there was HORRIBLE. Not only did my friends and I wait a very long time to even be asked for our first round of drinks, because of the owner and the waitresses servicing this party they had for dinner there; but we barely got service all night. We can only assume we offended her by asking for non-alcoholic drinks, since we got no offers for refills either. We didn't want to order food since we had already eaten prior to attending this cafe, but it's not like we got menus offered to us, anyways. Also, when we went to pay our bills, we were demanded by the manager/owner to pay $10 minimum each even though we were both driving and each had non-alcoholic drinks!
There was NO sign inside the establishment, outside on the door, nor on the menus, (or on their website -- I've checked) stating that there was a $10 minimum per person.. and there was no way that the service deserves a $7 tip on a $2.50-$3 bill for a drink!! We were humiliated and disgusted by this service, by the demand by the owner/manager! Personally, I am surprised that this is a demand when there is no way the service deserves this type of tip enforced when we barely got service at all, and we didn't want to order food.
I overheard others claim that they go through the same treatment there constantly, and rumor was going around the patrons I spoke to, that the owner puts all the tips her girls make, into her pocket instead of letting her waitresses have them when they work hard for it (unfortunately, they didn't work all that hard in our experience that night)...They told me that the ONLY reason they attend Java Jazz is for the amazing karaoke, which I can see why.. The karaoke company hired, MirMor Karaoke, is awesome. The host is fun, inviting, and has a huge selection.
My friends and I loved the karaoke that was there, and will definitely attend one of their other shows. However, based on our experience by the restaurant staff that were there that night, unfortunately there is no way I will go back to that establishment again for any reason.
I don't care what anyone says. It's not "Pizza Hut" it's not "Dominoes" it may not even be "Panagopoulos" but I don't care. I like their pizza and pasta.
You can't go wrong with a butter chicken pizza with white cream sauce, or plain chicken with or without BBQ sauce on it (at least at this place) and their pasta, Fine, not restaurant style, but I love getting their spaghetti with white sauce (chicken added) for a cheap price.
Certainly an alternative for a cheap spending night......oh, but if you want to have a pizza night order from here.......why spend $24 at the other places when this is good
No complaints here. The food was good. Their recipes for fried fish, fries, and cole slaw are good. Their rolls are good. Their prices are fair. Service with a smile. A panhandler came into the restaurant while we were there, and the staff were nice to him. That impressed me. Overall, one doesn't expect with fish and chips to have some kind of a gustatory explosion of wonderfulness...it's just fish and chips after all. But I was not disappointed in any way, and I wish these guys continued good business.
