Came here for a quick weekend lunch. I tried the Chef Hung in Richmond when it opened and was wondering how this location would be.
Service is excellent, tea is always topped up but the food is sub par. Ordered Champion Beef noodle soup, dumplings, and cold cucumbers to start.
Broth lacks depth in the beef soup, noodles are chewy which I like. Dumplings are just average and the cold cucumbers tasted like pickles and wasn't worth the $5.
I think one reviewer said it best a long time ago, If that is what the champion noodles soup is, I seriously question the merits of that contest.
At first when we heard about this restaurant we remembered bad reviews and unpleasant food, however, they have changed chefs and now chef Gerry and his kitchen crew are absolutely fantastic! Upon being seated, the atmosphere was pleasant with a nice dining layout, traditional Italian music lightly playing in the background, and nicely lit focal points such as the bar area and traditional decor. As we opened our menus we were delighted to see such a vast variety of wines and liqueurs, we were surprised that the poor Italian had such a vast variety to choose from and it was definitely a change of pace from our usual watering holes. Secondly, we observed on the table a promotion of special pastas offered on pasta nights and a seafood festival coming up in June. We were super excited and had been telling all our friends and family about this event. As we began to skim through our menus, we noticed a stocky older Italian man with salt and peppered hair tending to other tables. I'm guessing he must've been a manager or something. As we were looking at our menus he was servicing other tables and his attitude was just appaling. How could a manager speak to customers in such a entitled "I'm the boss" mentality is beyond me. He was rude, unappealing, and worst of all had his fingers in the food when carrying dishes to the tables. I was absolutely disgusted with not only his attitude and personality, but poor service skills and demeanour. If he is the owner he definitely needs to stay out of the restaurant, and if he's just a manager he definitely needs to be let go of, I'd expect such a classy upscale fine Italian restaurant to show a little more class when hiring personnel to be the front lines of your establishment. By now I had already lost my appetite but decided to give the food a shot, to start off we ordered the carpaccio which came as expected but was delicious none the less. Followed by the antipasto misto which had a assortment of Italian meats, cheeses, and olives enjoyed with bread and traditional olive oil with balsamic vinegar. Next came priuschutto wrapped cantelopes and calamari which was absolutely fantastic! A genuine taste with amazing attention to detail and flavours accentuating the natural flavours of the key ingredients and not heavily seasoned to mask errors. I was pleasantly surprised with the appetizers and had regained my appetite thanks to the kitchen staff. As we finished our appetizers the bussing staff was quick to remove and clear empty dishes from the table and the waiters were quick to help us pour our wine and waters even though we had bottles at our table and could've done so ourselves. This was a very classy touch. But again mr MANAGER had to walk around with his entitled attitude and nose stuck up in the air to offer anything to us let alone bringing us more desired bread. We had asked him twice to but he mumbled something under his breath to the words of "you don't f*cking need it" or "I don't f*cking need this".... Either which is just as bad... I am not deaf and know what I heard and will NEVER return to this restaurant. I am NOT fat or obese if that is what he was implying, and if he doesn't need this he definitely will NEVER get my service EVER again. Our table spent upwards of $500 for dinner which isn't cheap to be served by people like this?! You've GOT to be kidding. We had told all our family and friends to attend the upcoming seafood festival but will be telling them otherwise!! No way will they be getting our patronage or service let alone our referrals. The food was delicious but definitely not worth being belittled by the manager in the front by the bar. They had lost our respect and impression. All in all for a classy establishment such as the poor Italian trying to serve fine dining and delicious food, you could really use a makeover in the front head of staff position. The only thing dragging this place down is the "mr. Entitled" manager with the salt and pepper hair who looks like HE doesn't need it.
Easily the best BBQ I've had in Vancouver. In fact, it is on the same level as highly regarded restaurants I've visited in Texas and New Orleans. I can't give a higher compliment than that. As for BBQ restaurants in Seattle and Calgary that I've tried, Dixie's is on another planet. There is love and attention to detail in this food. For example, they use three kinds of wood in the smoker. We tried the brisket, ribs, and a regular link. All perfect as were the coleslaw, potato salad and pickle sides. Pecan pie with maple whipped cream was excellent. The staff were very friendly, attentive and enthusiastic about the BBQ wonders on offer. Portions and prices are very fair. Look forward to returning. Highly recommended!
Coming to Miku is always a phenomenal experience. Everything, from the location, to the food (the sushi quality is unmatched) and the staff that simply make you feel at home makes it one of my favourite restaurants. You never get that pretentious feel that you get at other fine dining restaurants - kudos to the staff for making that happen.
We had a reservation for five and got to sit on the patio. The view from here of the water front and harbour is great, especially during this time of the year. Great place to take someone if they are from out of town.
As for the food, presentation here is everything. The Miku Zen is something I always go for when I come for lunch, as it has a bit of everything. Something like that of a bento box, but much fancier of course. 5 types of rolls, with their aburi sushi being the best. Also some miso soup and appys. Their appetizers and lunch options are something you want to stick to because they do it very well.
Personally I enjoy it when a restaurant has good quality home cooked style cuisine. This place definitely had authentic Indian cuisine. And by 'home-cooked' I don't mean bland and lacking in taste, but rather simple and not bad enough that you have to increase your gym time and go lean for the next week.
The aloo gobi and garlic naan alone are worth coming here for. The gobi, which is cauliflower served in a mix with potatoes and Indian spices, is delicious. Not an uncommon dish but I really like how they make it here. The garlic naan is also out of this world fluffy.
And while honestly this is not the best Indian food i've ever had, it is still very enjoyable. Or maybe I've just had the best of the best when it comes to Indian food.
First off, if you are considering going, don't dilly dally- make a reservation. There are 3 seatings and certain rules/expectations. All is explained when you reserve and you really should as there are only 10 seats huddles round the counter while you watch the chef dazzle. There is no soy sauce, alcohol, rolls.
You can order à la carte but the omakase menus are the way to go. We tried both the $40 and $60 menu delight. All sushi is prepared right in front of your eyes and there is a process. Chef brings out the pieces of fish in a certain order to allow for room temperature and then the magic happens.
He slices the fish with such skill that there are no knife marks in the 'chopping' board. The rice is prepared authentically you can essentially taste each grain. The sauces and condiments are added to perfection - nothing else is needed. His wife is on hand at the start to take your order, provide hot hot tea (yay) and at the end when you get your bill. It's a very tight knit operation that flows well.
I would say that if you have time, go for dessert - a little something is needed to round off the meal.
Longtail has been on my list of 'must-try' for a while and perhaps perusing the website had boosted my expectations higher than they should have been.
Whilst I wasn't disappointed with the flavours, I was with the portion size, and cost. I half expected the prices to be on par with Granville Island or Lonsdale but they were closer to fine dining without the service and ambiance.
Ordered a pad Thai with prawns - flavours and texture meshed well. The three prawns were just three prawns and well I wanted more. Considering it cost $12, and you're eating out of a paper container, I don't think it's too much to ask for. We also had the roti with peanut sauce for $5, not bad, peanut sauce was better than anticipated. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I not seen the same person taking my cash, then immediately touching the roti to fry.... Wings were good and the tea from the tea is pretty good.
The skinny on this place: great flavours, small portions, high price.
Worst service of any restaurant I have ever been to. Server was horrible but tip was included so she did not have to come by. Food was great but service was non existant. Didn't even bother to take desert order. Found server in back to get bill.
We were a group of four and wanted a normal lunch without hassles. The waitress's were in a surly mood as
one gal's was late and none of the others appeared to help each other. We were forgotten and then we noticed others that were seated after us had ordered and already got their food. We called a gal over and asked what the #$%@ was happening with our original waitress. She ended up being the hostess and forgot to tell the waitress's that we needed our orders taken. HAD to ask for coffee refills, had to ask for water, had to ask for desert menu. The actual meals were just ok and seemed to take a long time to deliver. NOT A BUSY DAY EITHER.
There are so many choices in South Surrey and this place is now OFF THE LIST.
With coffees and one dessert $75.00 . NOT WORTH IT FOLKS!
I am new to the Fraser valley and I found this place by accident. I am so happy I did. I came in to a fairly busy night. I found a table for my wife and I in the corner, we were treated very well by the waitress and she was attentive to us considering how busy she seemed to be. I ordered a stuffed Yorkie appetizer and my wife had these rattlesnake bites. I loved them both so much I looked like I must have not eaten in a week eating mine and picking of hers back and forth..so damn good.i ordered a spicy chicken club and she ordered this inside out dynamite roll salad. I devoured mine and she wasnt touching hers..it was too pretty to eat she tells me. I dove in and tried it..tasted better than any dynamite roll I've had..these guys are legit. Just for shits and giggles we asked for a dessert menu..we were so full and I just wanted to see what else they could do... homemade cheesecake to die for..my waitress tells us the chef makes a new one every other week..this one was a captain morgans snores ...so full and we both finished that plate too..best I've ever had. I am so happy to find this place, and we will be back..and we will both get fat. But for food like this it's understandable. I'm gonna have to meet this Jack guy soon and shake his hand, or punch him for making such great food that will go straight to our love handles.
While I've not been to a Sammy's in a long time I assumed they would have at least had proper training in service..I was so so wrong. First I sit at the bar, around the steroid muscle-bound douchebags that seem to have some kind of in to the server staff, boyfriends or whatever. I try to get the attention of my so called bartender for a drink...well far too busy dealing with said roof monkeys about how much dressing they had on a salad..I finally got a beer..flat but cold. Then after asking for a food menu I was appalled on the prices in a place so much like a cactus/brown social house clone. I ordered a steak bite appetizer.. deep fried to carbon. Sent it back and didn't need another one. I was going to order the 22 dollar chicken fajita just for shits and giggles , alas my so called server was far too busy to talk to me..I guess I wasn't roided out enough for her liking. I won't be back.
We had a wonderful breakfast at Tommy’s. It is a very small restaurant so the lineup seems to start very early on the weekend. When we left at 9:00 there was already a lineup. Service is efficient and quick. Coffee is self serve. I had the Mediterranean scramble, eggs scrambled with fresh tomatoes, spinach, feta cheese and onions. It was served with fried potatoes toast and tzatziki sauce on the eggs. My husband had waffles with bacon, fried eggs and potatoes. It was all very good.
There is only 1 washroom and if you are handicapped it might be challenging for you as you have to climb 2 stairs to get to it and the toilet is right in front of the sink. I do mean right in front, if you bend over while you are on the toilet you will probably bump your head on the sink.
It had many families when we were there. It is really a bustling scene but the food and service is very good.
There's something about a place that tells you to reverse before you come and we did just the opposite. Strolling around Ambleside looking for some quick bite that was not too over our budget and this was one of the three we were considering. We decided to check this one out as the others would be second and third time visiting. This place is great even when you are trying to stay on the lean side of your diet. While talking to the waiter trying to figure out whether we should wait for a table or go next door, the smell really convinced us. At least me. The fish masala we had was actually an invention of theirs to make their waistline conscious friends feel a little better. The vegetables with some sort of a nut gravy was alright but good enough for me to not feel self-conscious later on. We've been back twice in the past month, and both times service was impeccable. Very different from your typical Indian curry houses, but then again, its West Vancouver.
I am a frequenter of the MangoMoka and must say that I am very pleased with the service, the coffee, and he food. All of the ingredients are fresh and the smoothies are great! The staff are very friendly and are always there to be of service to you. I heartily recommend it to all.
One thing I've always loved about this place is it vibe. Now, there are a lot of other good places in town, but their lunch is pretty good. Lots to choose from, delicious food, and most importantly, its all you can eat. Buffet. Yes, buffet. Omnomnom. I love coming here during the summer, which is right around the corner, and just having a bite at the patio. The view is amazing, lots of friendly people, good food, add a beer and I'm good to go. They've got some local crafts but one particular Indian beer is really good. I'm a sucker for their chicken tikka but there are lots of other good dishes to choose from. If youve had indian before, you'll like the naan but the basmati rice is pretty good as well. Make sure you get a patio seat before they run out!
360 spin! I used to not be a fan of this place, to be fair, a gave it a couple of chances before I decided to not go there entirely. I found the food to be rather bland and sub-par to other Chinese and asian place in town, not to mention the portion sizes served here are quite small. That is the impression I had up until now, or so I thought.
We were looking for a place to eat and this one seemed to be the only one that would not take forever to serve us. We went in and the food was not bad. I don't know if there has been a change in management since i last came or what but the fake meat was delicious. Also, don't miss the drumsticks! Delicious.
We've been a little sceptical coming to eat out again at an Indian place after my boyfriend and I got a horrible food poisoning at another place we ordered from. His parents were inviting us for dinner so I couldn't say no.
The four of us arrived at 6.40 pm for our reservation. We were a little late due to us having to wait for my boyfriend, but we were still welcomed and ushered into our spot. We got a place at the back and it was quite comfy. Not too noisy, and the decoration and place was very nice. I could see myself coming back for a date or something.
I don't know what kept us so long from coming here but the meal was delicious. We had the gobi butter masala and the pakoras, along with some rice and other dishes whose name I cannot recall. The waiter helped us pick our wines (which were on discount), and the food for that matter. Nothing was too spicy or overtly flavoured, which was a relief. The manager was there and made sure we got everything we wanted. The whole bill wasn't too bad for us but every once in a while it's nice to spill a few for living's sake.
Never coming back. Had 2 gift cards, one with $0 balance, one with $20 balance. Went there today to have lunch wanting to use up the $20 gift card. Cashier-in-training was on duty at the time. We had ordered 2 sandwiches and soups, then I gave the cashier-in-training both gift cards to pay. She had trouble getting the gift cards to scan on their system despite many tries. She asked a colleague for help, and during this time both the gift cards were lost amongst their huge pile of gift cards sitting on the counter. They didn't know which gift card was ours. We complained and the manager came out and all he offered was to take down our phone number while he calls the gift card company to see what he can do. We left, furious, to find lunch elsewhere, and $20 gone.
I also ordered a coffee in my own mug, so they had to give me the coffee. Next time if they give me a coffee, I would probably throw it away because it was pretty gross.
Three strikes against the Boathouse last night - one of us tried to order a nice lager and they did't have the first second or third choice that he wanted. None were available even though they were on the menu.
Then three of our party tried to order the lobster ravioli, only to be told they were already out, even though it was only 6 p.m. on a Tuesday night. Finally, and worst of all, the crab stuffed prawns which I always order and have always come with generous cream cheese herb and crab dolloped on top of each shrimp and baked - they arrived with a barely recognizable teeny swipe of some kind of moistener on them - maybe cream cheese or butter? and then they were dipped in panko. There was no stuffing. At all. And no crab. At all. And three of us ordered that once the ravioli situation went south so it wasn't just my plate. Three of us paid 30$ and got panko dipped shrimp - I can do that at home for far less money. Rip Off! Bye Boathouse.
So me and my gf decided to order from the fish shack pay a premium for delivery , since my gf is a pescatore I reluctantly agreed knowing very well that most sea food restaurants don't deliver!! So we ordered a bunch of food seafood stuffed mushrooms, the rock crab jalapeño
Poppers (absolutely no sign of crab,ZILCH and you charger 10 bucks for 5 half poopers half filled with cream cheese?), the seafood melt ( this one is the best..big toast lotsa butter but hardly ANY seafood filling OMG even a Chinese restaurant would do better), seafood cannelloni (3 pieces of narrow cannellonis filled with you guessed right...HARDLY ANYTHING) and the fish shack fried rice (should be served as an appy minus too much salt)..
Hey blokes if you guys want real seafood this is NOT the place unless you have MONEY TO BURN
