First point is that food doesn't need to be saturated in monosodium glutimate.The ingredients should be the key flavour components to any dish.The oil used for frying here must be changed more frequently as the dark greasy appearance of the fried foods is not acceptable to serve.The slimy meats seen in many dishes are most likely caused by improper frozen food defrosting process ,and is suspect to probable future gastrointestinal pains for the unknowing patron(s).Basic food preperation techniques are clearly not being used.
A friend and I went here for dinner on Saturday night. It was busy so had to wait for a table. The place is super small and it's almost like café style. You order at the counter and then they bring out the food. The food was good but it was very noisy with all the bang etc. Hard to have a conversation. They were super busy and had lots of take out orders. I will go back but will do a take out. Lots of meter street parking. Prices were a bit on high side for Indian food. Naan or Rice are included with your entrée. The food tasted good.
A coworker of mine swore by this place, he really liked the food and something else he valued greatly was how they recognized him and knew what he wanted to order. I'm not a regular and don't want or need that, but I have had some things from here before and it was okay.
But not today. I had the Cali-box and some edamame.
- Edamame - while the portion was quite generous, they weren't very good. I can't put my finger on exactly what was wrong, they tasted just off somehow - perhaps old, not fresh? I've had frozen edemame that were far better-tasting than these. These also had absolutely no seasoning whatsoever. Found a packet of salt in my desk, thank heavens, which made them edible. Just barely.
- Miso - I really enjoy miso and I like salt, but the miso was so overly salty I I simply could not drink it and had to throw it out
- Tempura - 3 pieces of the tempura were good, but the rest were awful - very greasy, soggy and limp. There was no dipping sauce for the tempura, either.
- California roll - I needed a magnifying glass to find the avocado. I think there might have been a smear on the inside of the nori. They were pretty chintzyon the cucumber too, and the rice wasn't especially tasty, either, just didn't seem...fresh.
- Sashimi - fans of wasabi would have been disappointed, there was no customary dot of wasabi underneath on any of them.
- Koroke - the half piece was okay
- Salad - good, I liked the dressing. Too bad there wan't more salad as it was really the only thing I enjoyed
Great little restaurant with a small menu but they make each item so good.
We tried the brussel sprout salad for the first time. So good.
Kids were fighting for the last pieces... I beat them to it.
The nachos and tacos are good. Fresh ingredients, makes it messy but fun to eat.
It's a fun time out.

Here's the Good versus Bad synopsis:
Reservations were made, accepted and a table was reserved for us.
They allowed us to use our ET Coupons for the meal. Some restaurants have lots of policy on this.
The "traditional style" bowls came out as ordered. Self-cook.
"Open-kitchen" concept so you see everything made.
Other than the NEW waiter that was serving staff, the other kitchen staff just stood there.
We ordered appetizers, they were cooked, they were placed onto the counter.... then just sat there for 10 minutes (I counted the minutes) getting cold while the waiter was busy with other tables.
The kitchen staff (3 of them) then stood there doing nothing but watch our appetizers (lamb skewers and wontons) get cold.
The rest of the meal was reminding the waiter we needed water, bowls, other cutlery, more food. We were extremely patient and he was very apologetic and gracious, but he was having troubles. He tried his best, it was his first week. He didn't get any help from his co-workers.
He gave us complimentary pop and dessert for our troubles.
We would return but the place needs to step it up if they intend to stay in business.
Besides our table, we only saw 4 more groups for the entire dinner.
If you enjoy plenty of salt, Pastameli is perfect for you. I ordered the Hawaiian ham and pineapple pizza. I couldn't taste the ham or pineapple because of the strong salt flavour. The tomato sauce was so salty that I couldn't taste any tomatoes. The crust was burned on the top and on the bottom. And it was very tough. All I could taste was salt. I was expecting a pizza that was rich and creamy from the ham and cheese, and sweet from the pineapple. What I got was salt, too much salt. I called the restaurant and spoke with the manager whose rudeness and poor attitude showed that he feels he is above constructive criticism. He mocked and ridiculed me until I hung up in disgust. Don't waste your money on the pizza at this place! The owner couldn't care less what customers think about his pizza.
I've been going to this place for years, as I only live a few blocks away. The restaurant has improved the quality of their breakfast dishes over the years, and I think they offer solid choices for a decent price. I have never ordered lunch or dinner here, as their offerings are not to my preferences, but breakfast is good.
I don't mind the very outdated and kind of drabby atmosphere. It's a typical diner, very similar to the types of diners I see in small towns. The customers who frequent the place are interesting and it's a fun place to people watch. They have a lot of loyal regulars... just like me.
Most of the servers are really friendly and helpful. Even the busing staff are polite and have welcoming smiles. Unfortunately, there is ONE server who is unfriendly and often rude. I do not like pointing out one person like this, but honestly, she is the only reason I hesitate to spend my money at this place.
I have noticed that this particular server is friendly with a few customers, but mostly she does not smile, barely says hello, does not seem interested in her job or care much about the customers or their needs. She seems to avoid my table as if I may be contagious. I have no idea if I said or did something that offended her, but then again, I don't generally have problems like that. But no matter how nice I am, how much I smile, or how much I tip, this one server always treats me the same. I don't think it's just me, as I have seen her treat many others like this too. It's just really sad, and not professional at all. I am a loyal, long term customer, and yet I do not feel welcome when I am served by this particular server.
Unfortunately, I have gotten nowhere by gently trying to address the issue directly with her. I don't feel comfortable pointing out this server's behaviour to any of her coworkers (although I'm sure they are well aware of it), and there never seems to be a manager onsite. I hope things change, otherwise, I'm going to start spending my money somewhere else.
Well we just came from the Tomahawk Restaurant in North Van. Soon as we walked in there was a staff hostess greeting all at the front door. Very friendly smile and asked us just to wait a moment, while they clean a booth for us. I only had a moment or two to look over all the wonderful items up front, sure brought back wonderful childhood memories. We were seated and a lovely young lady was a server. She was so pleasant and tentative to our needs. We were asked several times if our meal was to our liking and if we needed anything else. Everyone was so kind and smiles all around. The food, well it was out of this world. It was enough for 2 people at least. Very tasty and delicious. Was well worth the price. I enjoyed the fabulous bacon, out of this world tasty and tender. I would recommend this to all.
We phoned to order take out. They had a very rude manner on the phone. We were sure to specify we needed 3 chopsticks, soy sauce and plum sauce since we had none of them. Nothing was included. Most of the time they don't include it so we have to ask. Also, when we opened the prawn pockets the ticket they print out for each item to stick on top of the Styrofoam container was put inside the container laying across all four of the prawn pockets (can't be clean how do we know that paper didn't fall on the floor or something?). We tried pulling it off but the ink on the paper had transferred onto the food and the paper stuck to the sticky dough. We had to pull off half the dough. When we called they basically called us liars that we didn't' get any of the items we requested and to look again, really rudely. They didn't care at all about the pocket and wouldn't give a credit or anything. Cheapskates and so rude. Do not hire people for the service industry if they act like this. Or maybe they like it since it saves money here and there. Maybe they are told to ask that way by the owner? The food has gone downhill for the past 10 years and we will NEVER eat there again. Service was never 100% but this takes the cake. Remember there are plenty of places with better food and polite staff that we will be happy to spend our money on. You have lost more money by turning off us as customers and our group of friends than by saving on an order of prawn pockets you could have credited us.
Can't give them any higher rating than 1 star, wish we could give a 0.
the previous owners set the bar and left some big shoes for the new owner to fill. so far its not even close.
it used to be a great spot to get a quick cup of fresh coffee but now its the slowest process on lonsdale, I guess when there is only one staff working who has to do the til as well as make the coffee and god forbid if someone in line orders a gelato, your waiting close to 10 minutes for your americano
I have seen evidence of rat droppings on the floor, and I have overhead the owner saying they have a serious rat problem. he has seen the rats running all over the counters and even in the gelato coolers. We will not eat the baked goods anymore nor will we eat the gelato.
the owner seems to only hire young inexperience baristas which is fine if you give them the training but I dont want them training on my 4 dollar espresso. teach them after hours so my espresso isnt burnt or too hot.
when we order a cappicino, I want dont want a latte.
The previous owners would always make the temperature so the espresso was drinkable right away, not this owner. If I wanted to burn my mouth I would go to Starbucks.
the service is 1-2 stars out of 5 at best unless you are lucky enough to get Salvatore or his sister who definitely know what they are doing and know how to make a delicious Americano.
the atmosphere has dropped to 1-2 stars, unless there is a football (soccer) match on, then its ok. otherwise many of the regular clients have found another coffee shop.
food and gelato we wont touch because of the rats.
coffee depends on who is your barista, but 2-3 stars average unless Salvatore is your barista.
the new red seats outside are extremely uncomfortable..too bad it was a nice spot to sit and watch the passerbys.
Suggestions to the new owner
if it isnt broke, dont fix it. you didn't need to change anything.
Time to find a new coffee shop.
I was there with family friends tonight and saw the manager/owner of Dinaki's tell my friend who's blind that his guide dog must wait outside. After my friend offered to show legislation and Guide Dog certificate, the manager still refused, and went into the back several times to "check". When the manager finally came back, he denied ever saying that the guide dog must stay outside, while customers at other tables confronted the manager/owner, confirming that he did in fact say that the guide dog must stay out. He mentioned that the reason for the misunderstanding was that he didn't want to disturb other customers with the guide dog. To that, other customers told the manager/owner that they had no problem with the guide dog, and the only problem they were having was with his attitude. He then tried to make excuses and come up with examples, which made no logical sense to anyone listening. He also tried to blame the waitresses for the whole incident, saying they were uneducated and denying that he himself was uneducated as to the law requiring accommodation for guide dogs. Do not eat here, Dinaki's discriminates against people with disabilities.
I've been here a couple times and the food is great. The duck confit lettuce wraps are delicious although the portions are incredible small. There was barely enough confit for two tiny wraps. All the bowls I've had are delicious but again, on the small side. Service is efficient. Bring your appetite and your wallet!
Been there three times after work around 6pm. As a couple both time "GENEROUS" sized Sashimi seven pieces of Salmon and seven pieces of Tuna and three rolls 35$. We had the "Mixed Sashimi" once a little more but less filling for a dinner.
Considering the average Vancouver prices this is affordable and the Sashimi beats many other Japanese restaurants in quality and size.
Ignore bad tempered comments. Service was each time fast immediate by smiling girls and boys.
Style and decor is a bit aged but then who cares we came for food not for interior design. Actually the imitation, brown mixed slate, wallpaper is quite stunning. Having lived in Asia thirty years I can say it gives you the feel of an aged busy medium to small street Tokyo restaurant. Many more stylish in town who don't give any feel but fake decor.
Each time we got a spot but it still was very busy. If you are romantic, they have a small wall by the tables on the side street side you can carve your initials into the blue paint.
Seen quite a few couples with kids each time and heard French speaking customers.
We regret that we never picked up one someone mentioning this place years ago.
We will be stopping there on our way home more often, can't say one bad thing about it for that price. I nearly put the same review on Yelp just you know I am not an insider doing free adds.
The Shoestring Cafe is the neighborhood restaurant everyone wishes they had around the corner from their home. This family-owned restaurant is the perfect balance between casual and fine dining. It's a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere - in the Crestwood Industrial area of northeast Richmond. Once you've tried it though, you'll quickly realize this is one of the best places to have lunch or early dinner within a 10 km radius. The other eateries in the neighborhood (sandwich shops and noodles houses) aren't even in the same league.
Shoestring serves upscale comfort food in a welcoming atmosphere with attentive and prompt service. It's perfect for an upscale lunch. You have to try their hearty seafood corn chowder, pasta dishes, and their grilled steak (with shoestring potatoes, of course). All their dishes are well-prepared, delicious, and attractive. The prices are affordable (main courses range from $10-15) and the portions are just right - small enough to finish, but large enough to make you satisfied.
Shoestring is a real windfall for anyone near this area of Richmond. Speaking with the chef-owner, he reveals he developed his craft through decades of work in B.C., California, and overseas. Honestly, this place feels like it's a Yaletown restaurant scaled down to fit the suburban business hub in East Richmond.
I've literally been here 3 times this week for uthapam alone. It's a kind of crepe that is a vegetarian's delight with choice of 3 toppings. I usually choose tomato, onions and green chillis. Madras coffee is out of this world! If you are a foodie and want to try very good South Indian food, you must try this place. It is in Newton and a bit difficult to find. Other favorites of mine are the lamb dosa, chicken 69, & spring masala dosa. The business is family run and has become one my favorite places.
We tried the Salmon Tempura Roll, Sunset Roll, and Mango Paradise Roll. All yummy! The kids loved the Takoyaki. My favourite was the tuna sashimi. So creamy!!
We visited before 6 p.m. on a Tuesday. Apparently if you come later, regardless of night, you have to wait for a table.
We received appropriate attention from the server. Our visit was very pleasant.
We were a group of 4 expecting a lot more from this bistro but were very disappointed. The food is bland and the service is slow. We ordered various dishes but nothing seemed to impress us. We reserved a table in advance and were promised a good spot with a candlelight. None of that happened. If you are a foodie, do not bother. Seriously tasteless food!
Burgers and fries are not exactly hi end dining but the prices charged here are expensive for what you get. The burger was ok, that's it. Fries ok. Expensive meal though. Service was mediocre at best. New oWners?
AnOther patron went out for smoke, right outside the door, we asked the manager to deal with the cigarette smoke blowing into restaurant. She did nothing about it, patron threw his smoke on the ground and didn't put it out, smoke lingered into the restaurant for minutes and again we asked the patron to put it out and then the manager after the patron gave us attitude. Manager did nothing Again. It's probably her son who needs a lesson in manners.
The type of customers this little shack is attracting will prevent us from returning ever again.
Made reservations for a party of 10. Arrived at 6:30. Ordered by 6:45. Two people at our table ordered salads to start and they arrived 20 min later. Drinks were taking 15+ min to arrive and the servers response was 'oh, they haven't been brought out yet?' I believe that is your job as our server is it not?
After waiting for nearly an hour and watching other tables who had arrived after us finish their meals I asked to speak to the manager. He explained they were extremely busy, short staffed and everyone was in the same boat. Not the tables who were seated after us and had already finished appies and mains... He then said it was because our table had ordered appetizers so there is a wait between them and mains and our pizzas were going in the oven right now.
It made no sense!! A table of friends of ours had arrived 10 min after us and was done their appies and mains and were settling up their bill. It was close to 8:00pm!
Being in the service industry for years myself I found his explanation to be ridiculous. A table behind us of 14 for all their meals before us and they arrived at 7pm.
After all this we still had to wave the waiter down for drink refills. And ask a few times as he always forgot.
We were never offered any pizza bread or something to tides us over while we waited. We had an 11 month old with us and he wasn't offered anything either.
It was pretty upsetting! When the pizza did come out it was just ok. Nothing like we were used to eating there. Some people did love their pizzas tho.
Extremely disappointed and will NOT be going back!
The manager did offer free desserts to us, which only half the table received. We also received 25% off our bills and a gift cert. Sadly it didn't make up for the 1.5 hr wait and horrible lame excuses and service.
Tucked away behind the tax center and coffee shop was this unassuming Vietnamese restaurant. We saw the sign on the sidewalk and decided to come in. As we opened the door, this delicious smell of pho came rushing and I instantly started to drool haha. The place seemed adequqtely clean and cozy. We were seated almost right away. We saw this amazing looking plate with all kinds of rolls and grilled meat two tables down and decided to order the same thing to share. The plate was called the share plate and oh boy was it big, and delicious too. My friend decided to bring some home. I ordered a sate peanut soup for take out since that's what the server recommended. It was absolutely incredible! I don't know what's in it- but I assumed that it's peanut butter and beef broth. The portion was pretty big too. Definitely gonna order here again!
